Aubrey residents can comment Oct. 22 on a proposal to bring Belew Cemetery and adjoining rights of way into the city limits.

The City Council voted 5–0 on Sept. 24 to accept the voluntary annexation petition and set the public hearing for 6 p.m. Oct. 22 at 226 Countryside Drive. That vote starts the hearing process; it does not complete the annexation.

The area includes about 25.701 acres owned by Belew Cemetery at 9500 Belew Road, about 0.119 acres of Massey Road and Belew Road rights of way, and about 30.13 acres of railroad right of way. Together, the proposed annexation covers roughly 55.95 acres.

The city’s staff report says the cemetery owners sought annexation and want Aubrey police services. The hearing will give the public an opportunity to weigh in before the city decides whether to add the property to its boundaries.
