The Houston Astros’ bid to close a significant deficit ended in frustration on Wednesday, September 9, as they fell 11-7 to the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. Despite early offensive production, the visiting club could not sustain its momentum against a Philadelphia lineup that exploded for multiple runs in key innings.
Early Surge Fizzles
Houston generated significant energy in the third inning, taking a temporary lead before the home crowd turned the tide. Alvarez opened the scoring with a double to center field, bringing Smith home for a 1-0 advantage. The momentum shifted further when Paredes launched a 409-foot home run to left-center, driving in Alvarez to make it 3-0.
Diaz followed by singling to center to score Altuve, extending the lead to 4-0.
However, the Phillies responded immediately in the same inning. Turner singled to right to bring Realmuto home, cutting the deficit to 4-1. The situation unraveled further for Houston when Harper singled to right.
De La Cruz scored on an error, and Turner also crossed the plate due to a throwing error by right fielder Smith, who had previously been driven out. Harper was safe at second base on the same play, making the score 4-3. Arraez then singled to center to score Harper, tying the game at 4-4.
Phillies Take Control
Philadelphia seized control in the fourth inning. Smith homered to center field, a 416-foot shot that also brought Varsho home, giving the Phillies a 6-4 lead. Turner added to the advantage in the fifth with a 374-foot home run to right-center, making it 6-5.
The sixth inning proved decisive for the final outcome. Sosa singled to right to score Arraez, tying the game at 6-6. De La Cruz walked, allowing Stott to score and putting Crawford in scoring position. The inning concluded with a massive blast from Schwarber. His 408-foot home run to right field drove in Sosa, Crawford, and De La Cruz, pushing the lead to 11-6.
Closing Out the Game
Houston attempted a late rally in the seventh. Paredes singled to center to score Peña, making the final score 11-7. The victory was secured by strong pitching performances from the Phillies’ bullpen, who held Houston scoreless after the sixth inning.
Cristopher Sanchez (17-5) earned the win for Philadelphia, allowing six runs on ten hits over six innings without issuing a walk while striking out three. Jonathan Bowlan pitched one inning, allowing one run on two hits. Alex McFarlane and Jhoan Duran each threw a perfect inning of relief, with Duran recording two strikeouts.
For Houston, Hunter Brown started, pitching five innings while allowing four earned runs on seven hits but striking out seven. Bryan King took the loss (2-5) after encountering trouble in his brief appearance. He faced three batters and allowed three earned runs on three hits over zero innings before being pulled.
AJ Blubaugh allowed two earned runs on one hit and a walk in 0.1 innings, while Enyel De Los Santos pitched 0.2 innings without allowing a run or hit. Tatsuya Imai contributed two innings of relief, striking out three batters despite walking three.
The loss drops Houston to 74-72, while Philadelphia improves to 82-64.
