Tommy Castellanos has accounted for three Texas Tech touchdowns through two games, but the veteran quarterback’s place in the offense remains unsettled. He has taken selected snaps alongside starting quarterback Will Hammond, producing both useful plays and turnovers.
Against Houston last Friday, Castellanos threw an interception on his first play while trying to throw the ball out of bounds, according to Red Raiders Wire. He later returned near the goal line and ran for a 3-yard touchdown. Coach Joey McGuire said afterward that Hammond remains the starter and that Texas Tech will keep using packages designed for Castellanos.
Castellanos joined Texas Tech late in preseason camp as an emergency backup. The move came after the transfer portal had closed and Brendan Sorsby’s situation had concluded. Hammond is continuing to recover from a torn ACL, the report said.
Sports Illustrated writer Pat Forde listed Castellanos’ role among 10 questions that could influence the college football season. Texas Tech has not determined how it will use Castellanos going forward, including whether he will continue appearing near the goal line.
