The Dallas Cowboys have let go of running back Jaydon Blue, a fifth-round draft choice from the University of Texas, as they shift away from their "Thunder and Lightning" running back strategy. Blue, who struggled with maturity issues during his rookie season, was quickly picked up by the Philadelphia Eagles for their practice squad.
In a corresponding move, the Cowboys have brought in Emari Demercado, a former standout from the Arizona Cardinals, to enhance their running back lineup. Demercado, who measures 5 feet 11 inches and weighs 215 pounds, has shown versatility and experience, boasting an impressive average of 6.5 yards per carry in Arizona.
Demercado's abilities drew the attention of Cowboys offensive coordinator Klayton Adams, who had previously coached him. In his rookie year, Demercado averaged 4.9 yards per carry, improving to 9.3 yards per attempt in 2024. Over his three seasons with the Cardinals, he recorded 819 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 126 carries.
Currently, the Cowboys' running back group features Malik Davis as the backup option and Hunter Luepke in the fullback role. Israel Abanikanda has been added back to the practice squad, while the status of second-year player Phil Mafah remains unclear. The Cowboys will be monitoring Blue's performance with the Eagles, hoping he does not thrive in a rival's colors.
