BJ Edwards, previously a guard with the SMU Mustangs, has officially committed to the Oklahoma Sooners. This transfer comes as Edwards is granted an extra season of college basketball eligibility due to a five-for-five temporary injunction affecting the 2022 recruiting class.
Edwards played three seasons at SMU in Dallas after transferring from the University of Tennessee, where he had a brief stint of just 14 games. During his time at SMU, he played under two different head coaches: Rob Lanier and Andy Enfield.
Despite facing injuries, Edwards had his best season last year, participating in 28 games and averaging 12.7 points per game with a shooting percentage of 47.4%. He also contributed 5.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game, earning All-Conference defensive team honors in the ACC with an impressive average of 2.4 steals per game in the 2024-2025 season.
Although there was interest from SMU to keep him, Edwards opted to join head coach Porter Moser in Norman. The Sooners are aiming to enhance their roster after concluding the previous season with a 21-16 record and a 7-11 performance in SEC play, missing out on the NCAA Tournament.
The addition of Edwards is seen as a key improvement for the team ahead of the upcoming winter season.
