Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker Marist Liufau will have surgery for a fractured forearm and is anticipated to be sidelined for several weeks. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed that the injury took place during a preseason game against the New Orleans Saints while Liufau was making a tackle in the first quarter.
Schottenheimer commended Liufau's competitive nature, saying, "He'll be back." Liufau was selected in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft after playing at Notre Dame. Over the past two seasons, he has participated in all 34 games for the Cowboys.
Entering his third season, Liufau has shifted from inside linebacker to outside linebacker under defensive coordinator Christian Parker. He has expressed appreciation for the backing from teammates and coaches during this transition.
Last season, Liufau's involvement in special teams increased significantly, participating in 75% of the snaps compared to 35% in his rookie year. He recognizes the importance of special teams for maintaining roster positions, stressing the need to prioritize team success over personal pride.
Schottenheimer noted Liufau's valuable contributions to special teams, remarking on the challenges of losing him as a player. The Cowboys will proceed with surgery and adjust accordingly, as Liufau plays a crucial role in all aspects of special teams.
