They also ranked 30th in total yards allowed and were tied for 22nd in sacks. This follows a more effective defensive performance during previous years under Dan Quinn, who has since taken a coaching position with the Washington Commanders.
With Christian Parker stepping in as the new defensive coordinator, the Cowboys have experienced a shift in strategy and mindset. Williams noted that daily practices against a formidable offense have played a crucial role in their defensive growth. He expressed satisfaction with the progress made since the start of OTAs, while recognizing that further improvements are still needed.
In August, the Cowboys secured Williams with a three-year, $105.9 million contract extension, making him one of the highest-paid interior defensive linemen. Last season, he achieved 2.5 sacks, forced three fumbles, recorded one interception, and made 53 combined tackles over 15 games, earning a strong overall grade from Pro Football Focus.
The team has also strengthened its defense through key signings, including safety Jalen Thompson and cornerback Cobie Durant, along with acquiring veteran linebacker Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers. In the 2026 NFL Draft, they selected safety Caleb Downs and linebacker Malachi Lawrence to further enhance their defensive lineup.
