The Houston Texans have added defensive tackle Junior Tafuna to their practice squad, as confirmed on social media on September 2, 2026. This signing marks Tafuna's return to the Texans after he initially played for them during his rookie year following an undrafted status in 2025.
Tafuna was released by the Texans on August 5 and was subsequently claimed by the New York Jets the next day. However, he was among several players cut from the Jets during their roster reductions. Now back in Houston, Tafuna is anticipated to provide additional depth to a team with aspirations of reaching the Super Bowl.
Throughout his college career at Utah, Tafuna accumulated 108 combined tackles, 7.5 sacks, and 15 tackles for loss, along with three fumble recoveries, two interceptions, and one forced fumble over four seasons. Analysts have pointed out that while Tafuna may not possess all the ideal characteristics sought in interior defenders, his athleticism could be attractive to teams.
NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein characterized him as resilient at the line of scrimmage and effective against double-teams, while also noting that his margin for error is limited.
