The Houston Texans have officially named Justin Watson as a starter after the season-ending injury of Jayden Higgins, who suffered a torn ACL. This change comes as Watson, a veteran wide receiver and three-time Super Bowl champion, enters his second season with the team following a challenging debut year marred by injuries.
Watson's new position on the depth chart has sparked significant interest, particularly as he is set to play alongside two-time Pro Bowler Nico Collins. Jeremy Beadling from Texans Today noted that while Watson's promotion may not be shocking, it does raise concerns about his likelihood of securing a spot on the final 53-man roster.
Although he was part of the team last year, Watson is now viewed as being on the roster bubble.
The Texans' decision coincides with discussions about their receiving lineup, especially after acquiring Kayshon Boutte. ESPN's DJ Bien-Aime suggested the team would likely retain six receivers, including Watson, while the Houston Chronicle's Jonathan M. Alexander pointed out that Watson could be at risk of being released following Boutte's trade.
As the Texans gear up for their final preseason game against the Panthers, Watson's performance will be crucial. His height of 6-foot-2 and familiarity with the Texans' offensive scheme may provide him an edge over Boutte, who is 5-foot-11. To secure his place on the team, Watson must demonstrate consistent productivity and stay healthy.
