Aubrey went to Decatur on Friday night as the underdog and came home tied for the district lead.

The Chaparrals beat the state-ranked Eagles 28-21 at Eagle Stadium, the Denton Record-Chronicle reported in its Week 7 roundup. Decatur, ranked third in the state, had entered the game 5-0 and averaging 56 points a game, according to The Post-Signal's preview.

A fast start

Aubrey controlled the first half. The Chaparrals scored on a 2-yard run, an 8-yard touchdown pass and an 80-yard run to lead 21-0 at the break, then added a 24-yard touchdown run with 6:19 left in the third quarter to go up 28-0.

Decatur answered. The Eagles got on the board before the end of the third quarter, then scored twice more in the fourth, recovering an onside kick between the two touchdowns, to cut the gap to 28-21 with 6:58 remaining.

The stand

The game came down to one snap near the Aubrey goal line. Facing fourth-and-1 from the Chaparrals' 3, Decatur was stopped short, and Aubrey took over on downs to protect the win, the Record-Chronicle reported.

Before the game, Aubrey head coach Keith Ivy told The Post-Signal he viewed the matchup as a likely decider for the district title and said his defense needed to win at the line of scrimmage against Decatur's high-scoring offense.

Standings and next game

The win leaves Aubrey at 3-3 overall and 3-0 in District 4-4A Division I, level with Alvarado, which is also 3-0 in league play.

Aubrey returns home next week to face Carrollton Ranchview, which is 2-4 and 0-3 in the district after a 69-27 loss to Lake Dallas on Friday.
