Aubrey's varsity football team plays its biggest game of the season so far tonight, a 7 p.m. road trip to Eagle Stadium in Decatur to face the unbeaten Eagles.

The Chaparrals are 2-3 after a come-from-behind win over Springtown in Week 6. Decatur is 5-0 and ranked third in 4A Division I, according to The Post-Signal, which reported the Eagles beat Ranchview 63-7 and Lake Dallas 47-35 in their last two games.

Aubrey athletic director and head coach Keith Ivy told the paper he sees the matchup as a de facto district championship game. "We know we have several games after this, but we believe the road to the district championship goes through Decatur," he said.

What Aubrey faces

Decatur has averaged 56 points a game, with an offense that throws about 60% of the time, Ivy said. He described the Eagles as having "no real weaknesses" on offense, defense or special teams and said his defensive front will have to pressure the quarterback and win at the line of scrimmage.

Turnovers are the other piece. Ivy said Aubrey forced three turnovers against Springtown and did not give the ball up in the second half, which he called a turning point, and he wants extra possessions against an offense that scores as often as Decatur's.

Where Aubrey has an opening

The Eagles' defense has given up more than 30 points a game, according to The Post-Signal. Ivy credited his offensive line for wearing down Springtown, saying short runs grew into longer gains as that game went on, and he said Aubrey needs the same tonight.
