Denton County commissioners will take up jail staffing, a donated fire engine and a possible dispute with the county's health insurance administrator when they meet Tuesday, Oct. 13.
Jail staffing
The court is set to approve moving money into 10 full-time Detention Officer I positions, pay grade 104, that the fiscal 2027 budget carries at zero dollars. The agenda says the change is meant to support continuing hiring and raise staffing levels at the county jail. It does not list a dollar amount.
Blue Cross rebates
In closed session, commissioners plan to consult their lawyers about possible litigation with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas. The county belongs to the Public Employee Benefits Cooperative of North Texas, and the agenda says the dispute concerns Blue Cross' proposed reduction of guaranteed rebate credits for the 2026 and 2027 contract years under the cooperative's administrative services agreement.
Any vote would have to be taken in open session. The agenda gives no figures for the rebates at stake.
A donated pumper and court programs
A budget amendment would move $1,420,293 donated by the Big Sky Municipal Utility District into Denton County Fire Rescue's vehicle account for a Pierce Velocity pumper. Another would shift $210,000 from contingency to drug court programs in three district courts and three county criminal courts to help defendants with counseling, testing and other services.
Other items include a $3.3 million contract with Energy Product Experts for a second phase of electrical and generator upgrades, which includes a $413,382 contingency, and a $505,611 Public Health budget amendment for a diabetes case management program.
Dispatch and transit
Commissioners will also consider renewing shared dispatch and radio agreements with several small agencies, including the Krugerville Police Department, and a law enforcement services agreement with the Denton County Transportation Authority. An appointment to the DCTA board is on the open agenda, and a closed session item covers a personnel matter involving a member of that board.
The meeting begins at 9 a.m. in the third-floor courtroom of the Administrative Courthouse, 1 Courthouse Drive in Denton. Residents who want to speak must fill out a witness form online or call the court's aide at 940-349-2830.
