When Aubrey ISD students return to class Wednesday after a six-day break, anyone applying to college will have five days left to apply to any Texas public college or university without paying an application fee.

Texas' Free College Application Week runs Oct. 12-18. Under a state law signed by Gov. Greg Abbott, every public college and university must waive the undergraduate admission fee for Texas residents who apply through the ApplyTexas online application. Aubrey ISD has posted a reminder about the week on its website, alongside a note that classes resume Oct. 14.

The deadline

To qualify, an application has to be fully submitted on ApplyTexas by 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18. Applications that are started but not submitted by then do not count, the Denton Record-Chronicle reported, and applicants are advised to gather the required information ahead of time.

The waiver covers undergraduate admission for Texas residents, including students heading to college for the first time and those transferring. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board publishes residency guidelines for anyone unsure whether they qualify.

"All prospective students should take full advantage of this opportunity, which can save them hundreds of dollars as they apply to their chosen public Texas colleges and universities," Higher Education Commissioner Wynn Rosser said in a statement from the governor's office.

The governor's office says Texans sent in more than 260,000 applications during last year's free week.

Other planning tools

The state also points students to My Texas Future, a website where they can compare programs by tuition, location and value and look at which careers are in demand, and to its Direct Admissions program, both meant to streamline the college search.
