McKinney National Airport's new passenger terminal is scheduled to open Nov. 11, with Avelo Airlines planning flights to Atlanta, Denver, Nashville and New Orleans in December. McKinney is about 23 miles east of Aubrey. The city announced the plans Sept. 24.
Avelo will begin Fort Myers service on Nov. 11, followed by Las Vegas and Orlando on Nov. 12. Tampa and Fort Lauderdale flights are scheduled to start Nov. 19. The December additions will bring Avelo's total number of destinations from the airport, identified by code DTX, to nine.
Atlanta and Denver service begins Dec. 16 with four flights per week, while Nashville and New Orleans service starts Dec. 17 with two weekly flights each.
The Houston-based airline plans to station three 184-seat Boeing 737-800 aircraft at DTX. Flights will operate Wednesday through Monday, with no Tuesday service. The city expects more than 100 jobs, including pilots, flight attendants, aircraft technicians, ground-handling workers and customer service employees. Tickets are available through AveloAir.com.
FAA Southwest Region Airports Director Ignacio Flores presented the airport's operating certificate to McKinney aviation director Ken Carley. Construction contracts totaling $58 million were approved in May 2025 after voters rejected a $200 million airport bond in May 2023. The City Council approved the contracts 4-2, with Justin Beller and Patrick Cloutier opposed.
