Rain moves Aubrey Marching Classic bands into the new indoor athletic building, and Saginaw takes the top prize

The 19th annual contest at Aubrey High School leaned on the district's new multipurpose facility for warmups; the host band performed in exhibition while Terrell and Mesquite finished behind Saginaw.

The weather that postponed Aubrey's Peanut Festival parade on Oct. 3 also tested the 19th annual Aubrey Marching Classic, held the same Saturday at Aubrey High School. This year the bands had somewhere dry to go.

Before taking the football field, visiting bands sheltered and ran their warmups inside the district's indoor multipurpose athletic facility, which was finished earlier this year, The Post-Signal reported in its Oct. 8 edition.

"It would have been a really, really soggy, wet day," Aubrey ISD Director of Bands Jason Noyes told the newspaper, thanking Aubrey ISD and "everybody who voted for that bond." He said one band canceled but that most districts still made the trip.

Results

Saginaw High School was named grand champion, with Terrell High School second and Mesquite High School third when the top 10 were announced at the closing ceremony, according to The Post-Signal. Pilot Point placed third overall in Class 3A in the preliminary round, and Collinsville took the top Class 2A spot. Tioga also competed.

The contest used five judges, three for music and two for visuals, with music weighted 60 percent and visuals 40 percent, Noyes said.

The host band

Aubrey's own band performed its show, titled "Unbreakable," as an exhibition. It did not receive a score but got the same written comments from clinicians as the competing bands. Noyes said the staff works that feedback into rehearsals each week.

Band booster Amy Milton urged more parents to volunteer, even for an hour or a single weekend, and thanked the event's sponsors. Noyes credited parents and band families who gave up their Saturday to run the contest.
