The long-planned rebuild of US 377 through Aubrey is still moving on paper, but the money to buy the remaining land and build the road is not there yet, according to the latest monthly transportation report from Denton County Commissioner Ryan Williams' Precinct 1 office.
The project would turn US 377 from US 380 north to Business US 377 into a six-lane divided road with a raised median, replacing today's two-lane undivided rural highway. The report puts the estimated construction cost at about $362.1 million and lists construction funding at $0, with the bid date marked "pending funding."
Land purchases paused
Of the 267 parcels needed for the wider road, 56 remain to be acquired, the September report says. Acquisition of those has been put on hold "due to District budgetary constraints," a reference to TxDOT's Dallas District. The same note appears on other Denton County projects in the report, including later phases of FM 1385 and the US 380 rebuild through Prosper and Frisco.
The schedule in the report reflects the delay. It projects land acquisition finishing in September 2029, final plans the same month and utility relocations by September 2031, with the project ready to go to bid at that point if funding is in place.
Design split into five pieces
Design work continues. TxDOT gave the county's engineering firm, TNP, separate project numbers in April for five segments, the report says:
- US 380 to north of Arvin Hill Road
- north of Arvin Hill Road to north of FM 428/Spring Hill Road
- north of Spring Hill Road to north of Friendship Road
- north of Friendship Road to north of South Business US 377
- South Business US 377 to Business US 377 East
