A Late Rally Falls Short
The Baylor Bears fought valiantly to erase a first-half deficit, but a critical stop in the final minutes allowed the Kansas Jayhawks to escape with a narrow 25-24 victory at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Despite strong offensive outputs from quarterback DJ Lagway and receiver Gavin Freeman, the Bears’ inability to secure the ball when it mattered most proved costly.
Early Exchange Sets Tone
Kansas struck first in the opening period, with Isaiah Marshall connecting on a 22-yard pass to Carson Bruhn for a touchdown. Martin Connington’s kick tied the score at 7-7 after Dawson Pendergrass followed up with a one-yard run for Baylor. The teams entered halftime deadlocked at 7-7, setting the stage for a pivotal third quarter.
Third Quarter Shifts Momentum
The Bears seized control in the third period, capitalizing on a defensive breakdown. Devon Jordan intercepted a pass and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown, giving Baylor a 14-7 lead. Kansas responded with a Martin Connington 40-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 14-10.
However, DJ Lagway quickly retook the lead by throwing an eight-yard touchdown pass to Jayden McGowan, pushing the score to 21-10.
Fourth Quarter Drama
The fourth quarter saw Kansas mount a comeback. Isaiah Marshall threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Nik McMillan, though the two-point conversion failed, making the score 21-16. Connington added a 42-yard field goal to narrow the gap further at 21-19. Baylor then extended their lead to 24-19 when Rhett Armstrong kicked a 42-yard field goal.
