High-Scoring Affair Ends in Heartbreak for Houston

The Houston Astros poured on six home runs and amassed 11 runs in a high-octane offensive display, but the effort fell just short of the winning mark. The Washington Nationals, playing at home, managed to hold on for a 12-11 victory on Monday, July 6, 2026. Despite the explosive hitting, the Astros could not overcome the Nationals' own power surge in the fifth inning.

Astros Early Lead and Nationals Response

Houston jumped out to an early advantage in the first inning. Walker doubled to center, driving in Paredes to make it 1-0. The Nationals answered immediately in the same frame, with Mead doubling to center to score Wood, tying the game at 1-1. The momentum shifted dramatically in the second inning when Altuve launched a 372-foot home run to left field, scoring Shewmake and Matthews to give Houston a 4-1 lead.

Washington began chipping away at the deficit in the third inning. Diaz homered to left (389 feet) to score Smith, making it 6-1. The Astros added to their lead when García Jr. doubled to left to score Nuñez, bringing the score to 6-2. Mead then singled to left, scoring Wood to make it 6-3. However, the Nationals erupted in the bottom of the third. Abrams homered to right (392 feet), scoring García Jr. and Mead to tie the game at 6-6.

Fifth Inning Decides the Outcome

Houston regained the lead in the fifth inning. Mead hit a 404-foot home run to left center to make it 6-7. Millas followed with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Abrams to extend the Astros' lead to 6-8. The game turned decisively in the next play. Wood homered to center (446 feet), a four-run blast that scored Crews, Young, and Nuñez, pushing the Nationals ahead 12-6.

The Astros rallied late to make it a one-run game. In the sixth, Smith scored on a groundout that resulted in a double play, making it 7-12. In the eighth, Shewmake doubled to right to score Wade Jr., bringing the score to 8-12. Matthews then hit a 363-foot home run to left, scoring Diaz and Shewmake to make the final score 11-12.

Pitching Performances and Final Records

Houston starter Mike Burrows took the loss, pitching 4.1 innings while allowing 9 hits and 7 earned runs. He was joined in the bullpen by AJ Blubaugh, Nate Pearson, and Enyel De Los Santos. For Washington, Miles Mikolas earned the win, pitching 6.0 innings with 9 hits and 7 earned runs. Cole Henry and Clayton Beeter closed out the game, with Beeter recording the save.

The loss drops the Houston Astros to a 45-48 record. The Washington Nationals improve to 47-45. The game was played at Nationals Park in Washington, District of Columbia, with an attendance of 11,092.
