Houston's Offense Stalls

The Houston Astros found themselves in a deep hole early and never recovered as the Washington Nationals secured an 8-2 victory on Wednesday. The trouble began in the third inning when CJ Abrams drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left field, putting Washington ahead 1-0. The deficit widened shortly after when Lile doubled to left, allowing Luis García Jr. to score and extend the lead to 2-0.

Washington’s offense exploded in the fourth inning, capitalizing on a home run by García Jr. The blast to right center, measuring 417 feet, cleared the bases and sent Ruiz and Wood across the plate, turning a 2-0 game into a 5-0 lead. The Nationals added another run in the fifth inning when Abrams homered to right center, a 415-foot shot that made it 6-1.

Washington Extends Lead

The Nationals continued to pile on runs in the fifth inning. After Matthews singled to center to bring Diaz home, making the score 6-2, the inning saw more action. Tena grounded out to first, but the play allowed Lile to score, pushing the margin to 7-2. Ruiz then hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Crews and making it 8-2. The Nationals’ lead was never in jeopardy after that point.

Houston managed to score their only other run in the eighth inning. Allen reached on an infield single to shortstop, and Dezenzo scored on a throwing error by Abrams. Allen advanced to second on the play, but it was too little, too late for the visitors.

Pitching Performance

Washington’s Foster Griffin was the standout performer on the mound, earning the win with seven innings of work. He allowed just five hits and one earned run while striking out nine batters and walking none. Griffin’s record improved to 10-2. Orlando Ribalta and Justin Lawrence each pitched an inning in relief, combining for three hits allowed and no earned runs.

For Houston, Spencer Arrighetti took the loss after four innings of work. He allowed seven hits and eight earned runs, walking six batters and striking out two. Arrighetti’s record fell to 7-5. Alimber Santa pitched two scoreless innings, followed by one inning from Nate Pearson and one from Cristian Javier, both of whom allowed no runs.

Final Score and Records

The game was played at Nationals Park in Washington, District of Columbia, with an attendance of 17,760. With the loss, the Houston Astros’ record dropped to 46-49. The Washington Nationals improved to 48-46 on the season.
