Houston led 17-0 after the first quarter but could not hold off a late Las Vegas rally. The Raiders scored 12 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to take the win.

Texans Lead Early, But Cannot Hold Advantage

The Houston Texans opened their season with a dominant first-quarter performance, yet they ultimately fell to the Las Vegas Raiders 22-20 on Friday at Reliant Stadium. Despite building a 17-0 lead, the Texans were unable to maintain their advantage, allowing the visiting Raiders to outscore them 12-3 in the final two quarters. The game ended with Houston at 0-2 and Las Vegas at 1-1.

First Quarter Explosion

The Texans struck first with a 20-yard rushing touchdown by Woody Marks, followed by an extra point kick by Ka'imi Fairbairn. Houston extended their lead when Wade Woodaz returned an interception 80 yards for a touchdown, also followed by a Fairbairn kick. The first quarter concluded with a 51-yard field goal by Fairbairn, giving Houston a commanding 17-0 lead before the halftime break.

Second Half Shift

The momentum shifted in the second quarter when Matt Gay kicked a 52-yard field goal for Las Vegas, narrowing the gap to 17-3. However, the Texans responded with a 57-yard field goal by Fairbairn, restoring their 20-3 lead entering the halftime. In the third quarter, Dylan Laube ran for a 4-yard touchdown for the Raiders, with Kansei Matsuzawa kicking the extra point.

This play reduced the Houston lead to 20-10.

Late Rally and Final Score

The fourth quarter proved decisive. Dare Ogunbowale scored on a 19-yard run for Las Vegas, but the extra point attempt by Matsuzawa was failed, making the score 16-20. With the lead still in Houston's hands, Aidan O'Connell completed a 1-yard rushing touchdown for the Raiders.

The subsequent extra point attempt by Matsuzawa also failed, leaving the score at 22-20 in favor of Las Vegas. The Texans' offense, led by Davis Mills who completed 11 of 15 passes for 93 yards, was unable to prevent the late deficit. Woody Marks finished with 37 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Marlin Klein caught three passes for 31 yards.

For Las Vegas, Aidan O'Connell passed for 166 yards on 15 of 24 attempts, Mike Washington Jr. rushed for 56 yards, and Brandon Johnson caught two passes for 41 yards. The game saw an attendance of 69,765 fans.
