High school athletic programs in Denton County are shifting their focus toward the upcoming 2026-27 school year as the current academic cycle concludes. The University Interscholastic League recently finalized its annual Lone Star Cup standings, highlighting the achievements of local schools during the 2025-26 season. Walnut Grove secured the 5A division title, while Flower Mound, Allen, and Celina placed within the top five of that classification.
The University Interscholastic League Legislative Council also convened in Round Rock to discuss future regulations. A primary topic during the meeting was the potential sanctioning of girls flag football as an official sport. Meanwhile, the Texas High School Coaches Association released its annual super elite teams for UIL softball, honoring standout student-athletes from the 2026 season. Players from Allen and Flower Mound were among those recognized for their performance.
Baseball achievements also drew attention as Lovejoy, Lewisville ISD, and Prosper ISD were named among the local all-state honorees. The 2026 high school baseball season provided memorable moments for Lovejoy, contributing to its recognition alongside other district programs. Additionally, Star Local Media identified ten student-athletes from the region for its Star Spotlight series, acknowledging noteworthy performances across various sports.
The conclusion of the academic year also marked the end of several significant athletic careers. Cody Vanderford, the inaugural head football coach at Flower Mound High School, died on Monday. His passing was noted as the close of a notable chapter for the program. Similarly, Lewisville ISD saw the wrap-up of various sports careers as athletes transition out of high school competition.
Looking ahead, teams are adjusting to new competitive landscapes. Wakeland High School is set to join the Lewisville Independent School District, a move that impacts district alignments. Denton, located approximately 11 miles southwest of Aubrey, remains a central hub for these regional developments. District realignment and the identification of the year’s top teams are key subjects of discussion as coaches and administrators prepare for the next academic term.
