Ranchman’s by Marty B, a historic cafe in Ponder, Texas, has reopened its doors after being closed for almost six years. The restaurant, situated at 110 W. Bailsy St., is about six miles west of I-35W. It has undergone major renovations, including the addition of a large Western-themed saloon, a spacious patio that can accommodate up to 500 guests, and a music stage.
Originally opened in 1903 and revamped in the mid-1940s, Ranchman’s was purchased by local restaurateur Marty Bryan, who also owns other dining establishments like Marty B’s in Bartonville. Bryan has kept the oak-paneled dining room intact since its last remodel in 1951 and has preserved memorabilia from the Oscar-nominated film "Bonnie & Clyde."
The reopening drew a crowd, with eager customers arriving shortly after the establishment opened at 3 p.m. on a recent weekend. The menu has been broadened, now including classic offerings like griddled steaks and sizable chicken-fried steaks, along with new items such as burgers made from scratch and desserts inspired by Bryan’s mother’s recipes. Bryan stated that the restaurant's goal is to continue its traditional cooking methods.
Bryan, who had never visited Ranchman’s prior to its closure, was motivated to buy it after receiving requests from his patrons. The previous owner, Dave Ross, retired after two decades of service and sold the restaurant, which was originally co-founded by Grace “Pete” Jackson in 1992. Ranchman’s was a beloved spot for late Texas author Larry McMurtry, who found inspiration for his novel "Lonesome Dove" during a visit there. Plans for the future, including a Marty B’s Ice Cream, are still being finalized.
