Residents in several southern Denton County communities are being reminded that fireworks are prohibited within their city limits as they prepare for the Fourth of July celebrations. The municipalities of Argyle, Bartonville, Copper Canyon, Denton, Double Oak, Flower Mound, Highland Village, Lantana, and Northlake all maintain ordinances that ban the shooting or possession of fireworks. Denton is located approximately 11 miles southwest of Aubrey.

Local officials emphasize that the restrictions apply to all types of fireworks, including sparklers. Flower Mound has specifically highlighted this prohibition and urged residents to contact the non-emergency police line if they observe illegal firework use. According to a message from the Lantana Community Association, individuals caught violating the ordinance could face a fine of up to $1,000 per occurrence. Other jurisdictions warn that penalties for shooting fireworks in prohibited areas can reach $2,000.

The bans are intended to address several community concerns. Local associations note that the loud noises often frighten pets, which can lead to animals going missing during holiday periods. The restrictions also aim to support veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and other residents who may experience anxiety or distress due to the sounds. Additionally, officials point out that fireworks can easily start fires, particularly during dry and windy conditions common in July.

While most fireworks are banned, the use of small ground poppers is generally permitted within town limits. Residents who wish to use larger fireworks may do so on private property in unincorporated Denton County, provided they have the property owner's permission. Those interested in viewing professional displays have several local options. Roanoke is hosting festivities on July 3 with fireworks scheduled shortly after 9:15 p.m. Flower Mound will hold Independence Fest on Saturday, featuring a show at Bakersfield Park at 9:50 p.m., weather permitting. The City of Denton is organizing a parade and fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, while Grapevine will present fireworks over the lake at the same time on July 4.

Details regarding specific enforcement procedures or the total number of violations in previous years are not yet clear.
