SpaceX is set to construct a semiconductor manufacturing facility in Grimes County, east of College Station, with an initial investment exceeding $16.8 billion and the potential to create 3,000 jobs. The announcement was made by Governor Greg Abbott and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.
The planned site will cover 100 million square feet, making it one of the largest manufacturing buildings globally. The facility will integrate chip design, logic, memory, and advanced packaging under one roof, aiming to supply chips for Tesla's Optimus robots, Cybercab vehicles, and SpaceX's satellite data centers.
The state has allocated a $30 million grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund for the project, which also qualifies for tax incentives under the Jobs, Energy, Technology and Innovation program. Both Iola Independent School District and Anderson-Shiro ISD have approved agreements related to the project.
However, there is a discrepancy between the state's announced figure and a SpaceX filing, which indicated an initial investment of $55 billion, potentially rising to $119 billion. The difference in these figures has not been clarified by either the state or SpaceX, raising questions about the scope of the project and its implications for local economic development.
