Carmello Brooks appeared before a judge Monday in two separate criminal cases. One charge alleges an assault involving a pregnant person, but Nariah Harley asked prosecutors to end that case and said police misunderstood what happened. Harley said she does not consider herself a victim and identified Brooks as the father of her baby.
Harley described an argument at Brooks’ apartment last week. She said he told her several times to go, then carried her out and set her down outside after she declined. Brooks called police, she said.
His attorney, Brent Wasserstein, said officers’ body-camera recordings captured the encounter, and prosecutors will review that footage along with a 911 call Brooks made. Harley asked that both cases be dismissed so the two could move on.
The other case stems from an August dispute in northwest Harris County. Brooks is accused of breaking a door handle, resulting in a criminal mischief charge involving another woman and her sister. Family members said Brooks and the women attended high school together after growing up in Killeen.
Harley also is from Killeen and attends Texas Southern University. Wasserstein said Brooks hopes to return to class, but remains suspended from the team while the cases are pending. No further details were provided.
