Baylor will start Nate Bennett at quarterback against Prairie View A&M after DJ Lagway was ruled out with a high-ankle sprain. Pete Thamel reported that the game will be the first college start for Bennett.

Lagway was injured during Baylor’s 17-16 loss to Auburn but stayed in the game. He completed 27 of 54 passes for 333 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Coach Dave Aranda had earlier called Lagway day to day, while On3 reported that he had been trying to play through the injury but was considered doubtful.

Baylor scored a touchdown in the final seconds against Auburn, then missed a two-point conversion that would have won the game. The loss put the Bears at 0-1, and it was not clear whether Lagway’s health influenced the decision to attempt the conversion. Baylor is scheduled to host Louisiana Tech next weekend before opening Big 12 play against Colorado on Sept. 26.

No further details were provided about Lagway’s recovery timeline.
