The Cowboys’ season began with a 28-20 defeat against the New York Giants, with Dallas giving up 85 yards on eight penalties. A taunting penalty against Javonte Williams after a touchdown pushed Brandon Aubrey’s extra-point attempt farther from the goal posts.
Rookie Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart completed passes for 230 yards and added 54 yards rushing. Dallas struggled when Dart left the pocket, allowing him to prolong plays and gain more space. Dak Prescott finished 22 of 34 for 175 yards, throwing touchdown passes to CeeDee Lamb and Williams.
Williams also scored on the ground, but the Cowboys could not generate enough offense to offset the penalties and other execution problems.
Coach Brian Schottenheimer said Dallas fell short of its standard and started poorly on offense and defense. He said coaching and playing errors involving younger players must improve quickly, while accepting responsibility for the penalties on behalf of the staff and team. Schottenheimer called the outcome humbling.
Dallas had given up an NFL-high 30.1 points per game in 2025 and entered the new season with different defensive personnel. The Cowboys are set to play host to Washington next Sunday. No additional preparation details were provided.
