1,431 yards and 20 touchdowns preceded Cowboys backfield change

Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said the New York Giants’ defensive front disrupted the running game early, with penetration and physical play at the line of scrimmage. He also said Javonte Williams struggled to find running room before Dallas made adjustments after halftime.

The Cowboys then released running back Israel Abanikanda and added Tyler Goodson from the Atlanta Falcons. The move created a roster spot for Goodson after the team’s 69-yard rushing performance against New York in Week 1.

Abanikanda, a former Pitt running back, carried 239 times for 1,431 yards and 20 touchdowns during the 2022 college season. He appeared in six NFL games, all with the New York Jets in 2023, but did not establish a regular role during his professional career before Dallas released him.
