Malik Davis’ season is over after he injured his hip Friday during an outdoor workout at The Star in Frisco. The Cowboys said the non-contact session was only slightly more involved than a walk-through. Davis was transported from the field by cart, underwent surgery later that night and was placed on season-ending injured reserve.
Davis had won the No. 2 running back job behind Javonte Williams during most of August, following a strong training camp and preseason. The Cowboys expected him to contribute in Sunday’s game against the Giants.
Stephen Jones, the team’s chief operating officer, told 105.3 The Fan that Davis had earned the backup position through his work and that the team would have to turn to other players.
Veteran Emari Demercado was signed for depth and special-teams help. Israel Abanikanda, who is on the practice squad, also could see a larger role. The team could elevate Abanikanda for the game or place him on the active roster.
Davis backed up Williams last season and totaled 252 rushing yards with two touchdowns. He joined the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2022, appeared in 12 games as a rookie and gained 161 yards.
