SMU senior Enzo Panozzo has received his first Atlantic Coast Conference weekly award, sharing the league’s co-defensive player of the week honor with Notre Dame’s Blake Kelly. The conference announced the recognition Tuesday after the Mustangs defeated NC State 1-0.
Panozzo, a Sarasota, Florida, native, captained SMU’s defense during its ACC home opener and scored the only goal. The Mustangs limited NC State to eight shots, with two on target, while earning their fifth shutout of the season.
The honor is SMU’s second conference weekly award this season. Following the victory, the Mustangs moved to No. 3 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. SMU has a 7-0-1 overall record and is 2-0-0 in ACC competition.
The Mustangs are scheduled to return to conference play Sunday at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
