The Dallas Cowboys signed Israel Abanikanda off their practice squad after Malik Davis suffered a hip injury requiring surgery. Abanikanda is expected to serve as the team’s third running back. Dallas previously waived Jaydon Blue after the preseason and later claimed Emari Demercado from Kansas City, with Demercado slated to back up Javonte Williams. Fullback Hunter Luepke remains on the roster.
The Cowboys-Giants opener has a projected total of 48.5 points. Nick Harris selected Dallas to win and forecast a score below that mark, pointing to the Cowboys’ experience, the opening week and potentially weather conditions.
Coach Brian Schottenheimer said linebacker DeMarvion Overshown will take on much of the job of transmitting defensive calls through the communication helmet. Other players are ready for the duty as defensive packages change. Dallas is also evaluating offensive-line options, including veteran tackle D.J.
Humphries, who became available after Washington released him. Arizona chose Humphries 24th overall in 2015, and he became a full-time starter in 2016 before dealing with injuries through 2023.
A report on receiver Ryan Flournoy’s contract said Dallas could have flexibility in 2027. The deal has a $1.5 million base salary, a $500,000 roster bonus and $1.25 million in remaining signing-bonus proration. Trading him before the bonus is paid could save about $2 million on the salary cap, while a strong 2026 season could raise his trade value.
