George Odum has received his second practice squad elevation from the Houston Texans this season, this time for the team’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The move gives Houston another special teams option even though safeties Caleb Bullock and Reed Blankenship are healthy.
Odum played 71% of Houston’s special teams snaps against the Buffalo Bills and made one tackle in that 36-31 loss. Pro Football Focus ranked him 26th among the Texans’ 29 special teams players for the game, while noting that its overall grade does not show his performance in each individual phase. Texans coach DeMeco Ryans previously praised Odum’s playmaking during the preseason.
The veteran is in his ninth NFL season and has played for the Indianapolis Colts and San Francisco 49ers, earning one All-Pro honor with each team. The report listed him with 205 career tackles, three interceptions, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
Elsewhere, his totals were listed as 209 tackles, three interceptions, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries, along with 12 starts in 109 games.
Houston can elevate Odum one more time under the current arrangement. The Texans are scheduled to play the Colts in Week 3 after the Bengals game, potentially making that Odum’s final elevation before the team would need to place him on the 53-man roster or use another option.
