Kevin Jennings, the starting quarterback for the SMU Mustangs, is reportedly set to play in the season opener against the Florida State Seminoles. This news comes after he sustained a finger injury earlier this month when he jammed it in a locker room door during fall camp.
Head coach Rhett Lashlee expressed optimism regarding Jennings' recovery, mentioning that the redshirt senior has resumed throwing without experiencing pain. Lashlee indicated that Jennings will have a complete two weeks to prepare for the game, with the goal of being fully ready by kickoff.
Lashlee noted, "Things are progressing well. He is pain-free, and we are integrating him back into practice this week, expecting him to be fully prepared for game one." Reports from ESPN's Pete Thamel confirmed that Jennings has started throwing again as he moves closer to returning.
The injury was not deemed serious, and Jennings' presence is considered crucial for SMU's performance this season. Last year, he recorded career highs with 3,641 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and a 66.1% completion rate, though he also led the ACC with 13 interceptions, indicating an area for improvement as he readies for the upcoming season.
