A Game of Missed Opportunities
The Abilene Christian Wildcats entered Saturday’s contest at Galaxy Stadium with high hopes, but a defensive breakdown in the fourth quarter ultimately sealed their fate. The visiting team managed to hang around for three quarters, relying on a potent kicking game and a resilient passing attack led by John David Black.
However, they could not overcome Texas Tech’s balanced offensive output or a critical turnover that shifted momentum decisively.
Early Dominance by the Red Raiders
Texas Tech established control immediately, jumping out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Quinten Joyner provided the initial spark with a 14-yard touchdown run, followed shortly by J'Koby Williams powering in from five yards out. Both scores were converted by kicker Stone Harrington.
The Red Raiders extended their advantage early in the second quarter when Harrington connected on a 23-yard field goal, making it 17-0. Abilene Christian responded with a 41-yard field goal of their own from Brandon Perez, bringing the score to 17-3 at halftime.
Field Goals Define the Middle Frames
The third quarter was largely defined by placekicking. Stone Harrington continued his perfect day for Texas Tech, drilling three consecutive field goals from 28, 33, and 45 yards out. This offensive drought for the Red Raiders allowed Abilene Christian to believe they could mount a comeback, but their offense stalled repeatedly against a tough Tech defense.
