Denton County plans to put 24 used vehicles, most of them Chevrolet Tahoes, up for public bidding in an online auction this month, if commissioners sign off at their meeting Tuesday.

The request from county Purchasing Director Scott Arledge is on the Commissioners Court agenda for Nov. 3. It asks the court to declare the items surplus, advertise them and place them in Online Auction No. 26-2934, to be held in November. The court meets at 9 a.m. at the Administrative Courthouse, 1 Courthouse Drive in Denton.

What is on the list

The lot list attached to the request includes:

  • 11 Chevrolet Tahoes, model years 2010 to 2019
  • three Ford Interceptor Utility vehicles from 2016 and 2018
  • four Ford Crown Victorias from 2010 and 2011
  • two Ford Explorers, a 2011 Ford Expedition, a 2006 Ford F-150 XLT, a 2018 Dodge Ram 4x4 and a 2011 Ford E-150 van

Four more lots cover equipment: three of miscellaneous law enforcement gear and a FLIR Skywatch Sentinel.

The memo says the items are unrepairable, obsolete or of no further use to the county, and that storage space is limited. Selling online widens public access and takes advantage of the auctioneer's national marketing, according to the memo. The auctioneer is hired through BuyBoard.

The county says it cannot estimate what the sale will bring. Proceeds go to the county treasurer.

How the last sale went

The county's previous online auction, No. 26-2931, closed Sept. 18 with 221 lots, mostly office furniture and equipment. It brought $6,045.17 in total sales and $5,561.56 in net proceeds, which went into the general fund, according to a report commissioners approved Oct. 13.

Bids ranged from $5 for lots of desks and chairs to $875 for a lot of metal wire baskets; seven lawn mowers sold together for $220.

Some items from that sale were never picked up. A separate request Tuesday would let the county throw out leftover mail sorters, chairs, tables and a desk and workbench, which the Purchasing Office describes as unrepairable, obsolete or without further value.

The county had not posted bidding dates for the November auction as of Monday.
