Houston’s Late Rally Falls Short

The Houston Astros mounted a furious comeback attempt on Sunday, only to see their efforts end in the final frame at Globe Life Field. Despite erasing a deficit and tying the score, Houston could not complete the walk-off, losing 6-5 to the Texas Rangers. The defeat drops Houston to 47-51, while Texas improves to 49-47.

Early Struggles and Power Surges

Houston’s offense found early life in the second inning. With the score tied, Jose Altuve’s home run in the fourth inning had not yet occurred, but prior scoring had already shifted momentum. In the top of the second, the Astros took a 3-0 lead when Jake Duran scored on a single by Luis Lopez, followed by a double from Kyle Schwarber that drove in two more runs. However, the Rangers responded quickly. In the bottom of the fifth, Seby Zavala scored on a triple by Brandon Nimmo, making it 3-1. The Rangers then tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when Evan Carter scored on a single by Nathaniel Lowe, followed by runs from Adolis Garcia and Corey Seager, giving Texas a 4-2 advantage.

Pitching Performance and Late Drama

Houston’s starting pitcher, Cristian Javier, lasted three innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits while striking out four. He was relieved by Enyel De Los Santos, Bryan Abreu, and Steven Okert, who combined to keep the game within reach. The turning point came in the eighth inning when Josh Hader entered with the game tied 5-5 after the Rangers’ Josh Smith homered and the Astros’ Austin Hedges responded. Hader allowed three hits in his scoreless inning of work, including the tying home run by Hedges, before the game went to the ninth.

The Ninth Inning Finish

With the score tied 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth, the Rangers’ offense delivered the decisive blow. Brandon Nimmo singled to center field, driving in the winning run as Evan Carter scored from second base. The Rangers held on for the 6-5 victory. For Houston, Josh Hader took the loss, falling to 3-1 on the season. The Astros’ bullpen, including Bryan King and Steven Okert, worked to keep the game close, but the final hit proved insurmountable. The game drew 33,804 fans to Arlington.
