FlightAware recorded hundreds of cancellations at DFW, and flights leaving the airport were running about 49 minutes behind schedule, with delays growing.
The Philadelphia center also directs traffic involving Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark. Its failure affected Philadelphia and the New York area, with impacts extending to airports nationwide. The facility had been associated with significant service interruptions at Newark Liberty International Airport in spring 2025.
The FAA said its main data connection failed Monday morning, and a severed fiber-optic line prevented a switch to backup service. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said an Amtrak construction crew caused the damage. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said a new circuit could restore the primary connection sooner, while fiber repairs could require about 13 hours.
Verizon technicians were working on service, and the main circuit had already been scheduled for replacement as part of a national air-traffic-control modernization effort. Some service returned at LaGuardia, Kennedy and Philadelphia by early afternoon, though significant delays were expected through the rest of the day. Airlines allowed some no-fee changes, and the FAA advised checking flight status before traveling to an airport.
