Denton County is experiencing a significant surge in coronavirus hospitalizations, marking the most intense period of patient admissions recorded since the pandemic began. The number of individuals requiring hospital care has continued to climb over the past two weeks, following an initial report of more than 200 patients being treated simultaneously.
Data from the Denton County COVID-19 dashboard indicates that as of January 9, local medical facilities were caring for 215 patients with the virus. At that same time, intensive care units were operating at near maximum capacity. Specifically, more than 95 percent of all intensive care beds in the county were occupied. When including patients admitted for reasons other than the coronavirus, 77 percent of total hospital beds were filled.
The rise in hospitalizations corresponds with a sharp increase in confirmed infections across the region. As of January 9, the total number of known cases in Denton County exceeded 13,600. This figure represents a substantial jump from the 12,100 cases recorded just before the Christmas holiday. Earlier in the month, at the start of December, the county had reported 5,896 cases.
Denton is located approximately 11 miles southwest of Aubrey.
