The Dallas Cowboys have signed veteran linebacker Von Miller, a native of DeSoto, Texas, who indicated he had been in talks with the team before training camp began. Entering his 15th NFL season, Miller aims to strengthen the Cowboys' defense, especially in pass protection, with an impressive total of 138.5 career sacks, the highest among active players.
Miller's signing intensifies competition at the edge rusher position, potentially endangering the roster spots of multiple players. He has mainly played as a left outside linebacker in recent years, a position he is expected to occupy under defensive coordinator Christian Parker during passing plays.
Rashan Gary, acquired through trade this spring, is currently the starting left outside linebacker, while rookie Malachi Lawrence is also being trained for that role.
On the opposite side, second-year player Donovan Ezeiruaku is expected to fill the right outside linebacker position, with James Houston anticipated to be a significant rotational contributor. This situation leaves limited chances for Sam Williams and Marist Liufau, who are vying for the same role and need to prove their worth to make the 53-man roster.
Liufau could have trade value, having demonstrated potential as an inside linebacker with blitzing skills. Other players such as Tyrus Wheat, Isaiah Land, and Adedayo Odeleye are also being considered, with 17 practice squad spots available for promising candidates. While Miller's signing will likely impact the edge rusher group, further details on roster changes remain unclear.
