The SMU Mustangs are looking to bolster their wide receiver lineup with the addition of transfers Jalen Hale from Alabama and Yannick Smith from East Carolina during fall camp. This move follows the graduation of their top two receivers, Jordan Hudson and Romello Brinson, who collectively recorded over 1,400 receiving yards and nine touchdowns last season.
Quarterback Kevin Jennings is currently recovering from a hand injury, limiting his ability to work with key offensive players. Despite these hurdles, Hale and Smith have shown promise in their potential contributions. Redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Hawkins praised Smith for his ability to make contested catches and highlighted Hale's speed and evasion skills.
Hale, a former five-star recruit, faced challenges at Alabama due to a severe knee injury that kept him out for the entire 2024 season. However, he has regained his form at SMU. Wide receivers coach Rob Likens noted Hale's SEC experience and toughness as valuable assets. Smith brings over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns from East Carolina, known for his aggressive playing style.
With two weeks remaining before the season opener against Florida State on September 7, the team is focused on building chemistry and finalizing their depth chart. Cornerbacks coach Kyle Ward remarked on the competitive spirit that Hale and Smith have introduced, enhancing the team's overall performance.
