Aubrey households would pay 95 cents more a month for trash and recycling starting Dec. 1 if the City Council approves a rate increase requested by Republic Services, the city's franchised hauler. The council holds a public hearing on the change at its meeting Thursday, Oct. 22, at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 226 Countryside Drive.
The city's 2023 franchise agreement with Republic lets the company adjust its rates every year based on the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington consumer price index for water, sewer and trash service. The city received Republic's request on Sept. 15, and the company asked for a 4.65% increase based on the rolling average of that index, according to the staff report from the city controller. Staff recommend approval.
What changes on a monthly bill
The staff report breaks the residential charges into pieces:
- Weekly curbside trash: $12.15 to $12.71
- Weekly curbside recycling: $4.43 to $4.64
- Bulk pickup: 39 cents to 41 cents
- Household hazardous waste: 72 cents to 75 cents
- Franchise fee: $2.66 to $2.78
That brings the standard residential total from $20.35 to $21.30. For homes where the head of household is 65 or older or disabled, the total would go from $18.52 to $19.38. An extra 95-gallon trash cart would cost $8.02 a month instead of $7.66, and an extra recycling cart $5.81 instead of $5.55.
