As the Dallas Cowboys approach the end of their training camp in Oxnard, the team is focusing on its offensive line depth, particularly the backup center role. Quarterback Dak Prescott leads an offense that includes standout wide receivers CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, but concerns linger regarding the offensive line's backup options.
Veteran Matt Hennessy was initially expected to fill in for starter Cooper Beebe if needed, but a neck injury has placed him on season-ending injured reserve. In his absence, T.J. Bass has emerged as the leading candidate for the backup center position, despite having primarily played guard.
Bass has started 10 games over the past three seasons and was offered a second-round tender worth $5.76 million in the offseason.
During the first preseason game, Bass took on the center role for two series before being substituted by Nick Leverett, who has more experience at guard but has also started once at center. Following the game, Leverett was seen working as the backup center, while Bass returned to his guard position during practice.
With Beebe's history of injuries, the Cowboys are under pressure to solidify their offensive line depth, making the upcoming weeks critical for both Bass and Leverett as they finalize their backup center strategy.
